Porsche Launches an eMTB Featuring Magura's Integrated Cockpit & Inverted Fork

Joining a long list of luxury companies attempting to make mountain bikes Porsche seems to have at least put some effort into the range of bikes as they reached out to Rotwild to help develop and produce the carbon frames.

Their new bikes come in two different flavors, with a more commuter orientated Sport model and the adventure/eMTB offering in the Cross. Porsche has incorporated Magura's wild MCi integrated cockpit that features the brake master cylinders inside the bars for the Sport model. Magura also covers the front suspension duties with their Boltron eMTB inverted suspension fork with 100mm of travel.

bigquotesA frame that broadens your horizons. A drive that takes you further. And a feeling that is unmistakably Porsche. Porsche

Both models feature Shimano's EP8 drive unit with the Cross using Shimano's 12 speed XT drivetrain and the Sport running Di2 electronic shifting. The more MTB oriented Cross bike swaps out the MCi bars for a standard bar allowing them to run Magura's MT Trail brakes and e-bike specific 220mm rotors. Although there definitely isn't anything groundbreaking happening with these bikes, it's always interesting to see what companies outside of the industry think up when creating a bike.

The Cross model designed to act more like an eMTB comes with a dropper post, 220mm rotors and slightly beefier tires.

The most expensive Sport model is designed more around commuting with integrated lights and slicker tires.

Both Porsche models will be available from late March and it is probably no surprise that they won't come cheap. The Cross model costs $8,549 and the Sport version reaching the heights of $10,700. This price is around $800 less than the Santa Cruz Bullit we reviewed earlier this week. You can find out more here.

The electric motor should have been mounted in the rear, following tradition.

It’s more of a Cayman. (Though a pedestrian Cayman commuter =)

This whole thing is rather unfortunate. A shame really. Being a company that has been building legendary sports- and race cars for over 7 decades, you'd think they'd have the expertise to design a decent mountainbike.
  • 46 0
@BenTheSwabian: actually you’d think, they’d have the expertise to stick to what they’re good at.
  • 6 5
@stuggidavid: ...which is building extremely high-quality vehicles meant to be driven in a dynamic manner. I dont see why this shouldnt extend to road- or mountainbikes.

@BenTheSwabian: or ask to knowledgeable people

@BenTheSwabian: This is the company that built a car backwards then spent 50 years engineering it until it was still backwards but worked. It might be a while before they get good at E-bikes.

@Fix-the-Spade: it's amazing how many people don't realize how stupid it is to put an engine behind the rear axle.

"They handle so good" yea... have fun with your understeer on entry and snap oversteer on exit. I like my cars loose in tight off 100% opposite of what porsche has to offer

Place the rider behind the rear wheel so it "handles" like a porsche. Understeer understeer but if you get it to oversteer your going round

@englertracing: You've either never driven a 911 or don't have the first idea what you're doing.

 @BenTheSwabian:

Show me a 911 that behaves this predictably when flogged
youtu.be/vwl40XFvpLE
  • 4 0
@BenTheSwabian: Exactly. Non-Porsche owners think every 911 handles like a 930 turbo from the 70's.
  • 4 0
@gieseja: Exactly what I meant. I maybe should have specified that I mean a modern 911. There's a very good reason why time and time again the respectively latest 911 has been the fastest production car on the Nürburgring.
  • 2 0
@englertracing: @englertracing: ...show you a 911 that corners well? Oh I don't know, like, all of them since the 996?

Also since you provided a rallye car as an example: Take a wild guess what the German national rallye champion is driving. It's a 997 GT3 Cup.

Why do these always look like the weird stuff you see on Aliexpress, even when they bother to make their own designs? If you know enough about bikes to know the difference between XT and XO, why would you think a bike like this looks good?
  • 6 1
I think it's a combination of wanting to push the limits in design, and also having a design team that has previously only worked on cars, so there's a lot of angular trends and specifications specific to the mtb world that they likely don't know about. Only examples I know of that worked was when BMC made a Lambo edition Impec, and Specialized made the Mclaren Tarmac. But even then, those were just paint swatches for road bikes. Bugatti made a road bike, and I think Audi made a bike a few years back and they both looked like they were designed by Dr. Doofenshmirtz.
  • 2 0
@hunkyG: FWIF McLaren was actually involved in the carbon layup engineering of that Tarmac model. Specialized has contracted with them for advanced engineering on other past projects too

Porsche has active for decades in industrial design and fashion design and have a separate division for this. This bike likely came from that group, and I think it's likely that the car designers were not involved. More likely that they contracted with people from the bike industry for additional help

As long as it matches the Porsche in the garage, this Porsche e-bike will make for a great runabout while waiting for the mega yacht to get refueled at the Port of Montenegro. No fuel tax in Montenegro will pay for the bike alone.

Finally a bike that those well-regarded Crankbrothers wheels look right on!

Difficult to imagine any serious mountain biker buying one of these....more likely someone with loads of money and obsessed with all things Porsche.
Of course, they won’t ride it......it’ll be hung on the wall in their lounge.

Sweet baby Jesus, wtf is that monstrosity.
  • 7 2
It is still cheaper the sc/spesh, have nice features and will be sold; What is wrong with you people? It is just a niche bike for people who are willing to commute around neighborhood or to the nearest golf / beach / etc

And being sold via car dealership will reduce effort for potential buyer;
  • 12 4
 disgusting
  • 2 0
Basically, as the prev. model, its a Rotwild bike with a facelift from Prosche Design ... and most likely you'll never see one of these as the number of bikes produced will be quite limited.

Question is, why is it cheaper then the Rotwild Ultra models and why doesn't it come with a 8pins dropper post?

I would never buy a Magura MCi, given that they don't produce lever that stay sealed > 2 years under normal wear. But hey, these bikes will never see normal wear so I guess its a perfect fit for these bikes Wink

I'm more interested in the Crankbrothers wheels it's sporting. Are the TwinSpar spoke system being re-released?
These wheels were my favourite wheels and while some may not agree I found them trouble free.
  • 5 0
Well it certainly looks like an eBike
  • 6 2
This should be the point where real mountain bikers go one way, and ebikers go another. We ain't the same.
  • 2 1
It is strange this is marketed as a commuter bike but it doesn't accept fenders. Were they planning on calling off of work every time it is wet, muddy or slushy outside? You can't even bodge on an effective front fender because the fork is inverted. This would make the world's shittiest commuter unless you live in a desert.
  • 3 0
you drive the Porsche when it's raining
  • 2 2
U do not need fenders in socal

more pathetic using your famous name to capitalize on the hot e bike market crap. nobody buys these bikes . they are just marketing tools to sell more cars . VW Ducati , Harley Davidson, Porsche , etc Rotwild a good quality bike company in germany makes the Porsche model bike . It's offered in their lineup as being something extra special when in fact it isn't . the only thing special about it is the exorbitant price . There is a VW dealer in the next village to where i live that has an e bike in their showroom window . it's been there for the last five years collecting dust .
  • 1 0
nice bit of cashing by the VAG group here off the back of recent COVID driven growth in cycling. Like it lump it "real" enthusiasts as we are, are a minority sport compared to other past times. Most of the said less immersed in the sport will see the brand name and instantly thing it's the pinnacle. Sad really.
  • 1 0
I don't give an RAF who makes these POSs. Like all others of it's ilk - it has a motor, which makes it a motorcycle. Makes no difference what kind of throttle mechanism it has - twist, thumby, crankset - it's still an offroad (sort-of) motorcycle. An OHV that should be licensed as one, and limited to trails designated for motorized use. I'll get one when in my doterage, I become such an extreme weinie, that my legs can no longer push a real bicycle up a hill. At which point - it'll be back to real motorcycles, with real motors, that have real suspensionsn and can do real speed on trails that would ruin what those amongst us call "ebikes", in about 100 yards of sandy 3' whoops. Until then - what calls me are real bicycles, without motors, that actually demand some honest effort of a rider.

Ugh... When automotive companies design bicycles. I don't understand how brands like BMW, Porsche, and most everyone else that tries can make such beautiful cars, yet such ugly 'bicycles'.
  • 3 0
That is cool, I did not know about the magura fork. I knew about the MCi but I did not know it was for sale.
  • 1 0
You are correct the MCi is not for sale but it will start coming on prebuilt bikes.
  • 1 0
@ols532704: Bummer, it is such a cool thing I wish people could buy it.
  • 1 0
@jmtbf: Yeah it requires too much integration as you probably know. They probably dont want people cutting holes in their forks also
  • 1 0
@ols532704: I mean they can sell the fork with it.
  • 1 0
 @jmtbf: Yeah you right
  • 2 0
Pass. Doesn't have a hybrid petrol system with twin turbos. Like an OBR 46cc 12hp engine, with a turbo added. Or an OBR twin with twin turbos.. Now I wanna see that..
  • 1 0
You can't add turbos to a 2 stroke as inlet and outlet are open at the same time at least basic weedwacker motors like the OBR's. I rather pay double the money anyway and fit an rcmax 71cc like I have in my 5th scale, a proper designed from the ground up 2 stroke, not a tuned weed wacker for £700....

So an ebike version of all the BMW and Porsche "mtn bikes" that have been posted for way too much $ by clueless (as it applied to mtb) sellers on craigslists around big cities in North America for the past 10+ years.
  • 1 0
I seriously doubt that these will sell in the kind of quantities it takes to be profitable. I think this is just a branding exercise for Porsche more than a real stab at the bike business.
  • 1 1
You'd think that at least one of Porsches employees rode mountainbikes. All they needed to do was put out an internal memo saying "can one of our mtb riding employees look at this bike and tell us whether it looks good or not?"
Woulda saved them a whole load of effort
  • 1 0
Very polarizing design but at least something really unique, IMO newest porches are beefier so this probably explains design choice. I wish they have posted a picture with 911.
  • 3 0
Hang on. Di2 is still being specced on new bikes?
  • 5 0
Yes, usually on ebikes cause it mates up with the electronic system nicely.
